Abu al-Hasan al-Ash`ari (d. 935)

A traditionalist theologian who was trained as a Mu`tazilite and then underwent a conversion in which he said he was directed by God to defend traditionalist doctrines using the rational argumentation of kalam. The Ash`arite school of theology is named after him.
