Ka`ba

The ancient cubic structure, at the center of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, toward which the salah is oriented and around which the hajj centers. It is said to have been built by Adam, rebuilt by Abraham and Ishmael, and restored several times since. It was being used as a pagan pilgrimage site before the advent of Islam.
