hajj (pilgrimage)

The pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is required to make once in his or her lifetime, if she has the means to do so. The hajj is performed during a fixed time of the Muslim year, and includes circumambulation of the Ka`ba, a sacrifice commemorating Abraham's near sacrifice of his son, and other carefully prescribed rituals such as retracing Hagar's steps between the two hills of Safa and Marwa.
