The pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is required to make once in his or her lifetime, if she has the means to do so. The hajj is performed during a fixed time of the Muslim year, and includes circumambulation of the Ka`ba, a sacrifice commemorating Abraham's near sacrifice of his son, and other carefully prescribed rituals such as retracing Hagar's steps between the two hills of Safa and Marwa.
