sawm (fasting)

Abstaining from food, drink, and bodily pleasures (e.g. sex and smoking) between daybreak and sunset.

Fasting is obligatory during the entire lunar month of Ramadan (unless there are mitigating circumstances - see rukhsa).  Additional fasting is recommended (supererogatory).  Fasting can also serve as an atonement for a broken vow or as a substitute for certain obligations.
