wudu' (ablution)

The ritual cleansing usually performed before each prayer, to restore a state of ritual purity after a state of minor impurity.  (Major impurity requires a complete bath, ghusl.)

Wudu' includes the washing of the forearms, head, and feet.  If water is unavailable, clean dirt may be used instead; this is called tayammum.
