8th century BCE prophet in the southern kingdom of Judah. He urged Judah to stand firm when Assyria destroyed and exiled the northern kingdom of Israel and laid siege (unsuccessfully) to Jerusalem, the capital of Judah. He is noted for his vivid imagery and his visions of a messianic age.
